Executive Director's Report
More than a million people had some contact with The Institute
of Texan Cultures in 1983-1984, as we met our legislative charge to be
"a center concerned with subjects relating to the history and culture of
the people of Texas:'
Under that mandate, we carried out our mission to collect, organize
and interpret information on Texas subjects, and to produce films, filmstrips,
slides, tapes, publications and exhibits for statewide use on television,
in classrooms, in museums and at public gatherings for the benefit
of the people of Texas.
Some 65,000 students and their instructors toured the exhibit floor
for guided learning experiences, about a 25 percent increase from the
year before. Others taking part in special events, tours and individual
visits raised the total to about 390,000 people who saw our facility at
first hand. Nearly a third of those visited during the very successful fourday
Folklife Festival which annually helps Texans celebrate their rich
history and culture.
Staff members and costumed volunteers took Tex-Kit artifact collections
and other educational programs throughout the state, reaching
an additional 43,000 people in schools and adult groups. Traveling exhibits
displayed in shopping malls, schools, museums, libraries, banks and
corporations; and Institute teaching guides, books, pamphlets and audiovisual
programs reached several hundred thousand Texans. Publications
sales approached 14,000, and 2,500 audiovisual programs were purchased,
spreading our unique educational experience even further.
More than 720 Associates paid from $25 to $5,000 each to initiate
or renew membership. The 325 local volunteers of the Alliance contributed
more than 41,000 hours worth about $285,000. A statewide
network of 170 Ambassadors helped spread our influence and programs
throughout Texas, and rounded out membership roles to 1,215 people
actively supporting us in our day-to-day operation and outreach.
While members remain the core of our strength, academic research
continues as the cornerstone of The Institute's educational excellence.
Between 40 and 50 research projects were active throughout the year,
serving as the basis for our products, allowing development and communication
of our purpose as a multicultural education center.
We took a major step toward even more efficiency with an operating
computer system of 16 work stations and three printers. Our staff now
may write, edit, file and communicate with each other electronically.
A modern tool thus helps us to delve into our past-a fitting full circle
in humanistic continuity.
Although much of their cultural history remains relatively unavailable
to some Texans, I am proud to report an entirely successful year,
in which our mission was accomplished, our legislative mandate met
and progress made toward this important end.

Educational Programs
Texas history and folk cultures were portrayed for visitors with
docent- and teacher-led participatory experiences. Innovative educators
at The Institute of Texan Cultures were responsible for interpreting the
exhibit floor and an outside area called the "Back 40:' Located on the
southeast corner of The Institute's grounds, this area features permanent
structures where visitors can relate to and experience various facets of
early Texas life.
A small one-room schoolhouse on the "Back 40" provides a graphic
setting for in-depth teaching of what school was like in earlier days.
Children can experience a spelling bee or el-o-cu-tion from real
McGuffey's Readers or Webster's Blueback Spellers.
The army fort headquarters building helps provide visitors a flashback
in history of what the army contributed, and what it was like to
be a soldier or in an army family in earlier days. Teachers may substitute
a program which includes storytelling, toys and games of the era, according
to age/grade level, utilizing the building and its grounds to provide
historical perspective.
A pioneer wagon interests most visitors, as does a new acquisition,
the Texas barn exhibit, a building which adds considerable teaching
potential. Plans for the barn include educational programs showing why
it was the center of activity on the farm, and music, so that children
can sample the pioneer's social gatherings. Currently, there are bales
of hay for sitting, a salt lick to hold, bolls of cotton, ears of corn and
some slightly gamey wool to handle. A plow and cultivator can be
explored, and the sharper tools are safely hung on the walls to see.
An operating windmill was also constructed last year, and a water
tank is to be installed soon, completing the display.
As the "Back 40" grows, it becomes an ever more important tool
in helping The Institute to serve as a statewide educational communication
center concerned with subjects relating to the history, culture and
folklore of Texas.

Publications and Audiovisuals
The Institute of Texan Cultures sold 13,960 copies of its various
publications. Its newest publication is Exploration in Texas: Ancient and
Otherwise, With Thoughts on the Nature of Evidence, written by staff
member Dr. John L. Davis. Several books are presently in production
and will be on The Institute's shelves next fiscal year. The English Texans
and The Japanese Texans will join The Institute's ethnic series. The English
Texans explores the involvement of this ethnic group in settling Texas
and in financing its development as well. The Japanese Texans is a
narrative story of the first arrivals, colonial efforts, wartime troubles and
the experiences of later generations.
The Institute sold more than 2,500 audiovisual programs this year.
The newest, Built in Texas, won a silver award in its category in the 1984
International Film & Television Festival of New York. Using historical
photographs to show our progress from rock shelters and tip is to the
bustling cities of the early 1900's, this informative new audiovisual gives
a tour of Texas from small towns to urban centers.
Coming up next fiscal year-Symbols of Texas. This audiovisual will meet
the curriculum guidelines for social studies education set by the Texas
Education Agency. Suggested audiences will be kindergarten through
third grade students. Texas's numerous official and unofficial symbols
will be presented and explained.
Membership Programs
The Alliance is the volunteer force without which The Institute
could not function. This year, in support programs of lTC, more than
325 volunteers contributed 41,826.5 hours of their time with current
market value of $284,420.20. They brought the history of Texas alive
for thousands of schoolchildren and visitors from all over the world,
assisted the curator with artifacts, worked with the Research Library and
in the Store, managed information desks and supported the staff in
almost every ITC department. Alliance members represented The Institute
to the public, making their contributions of time and talents a crucial
part of The Institute's success.
More than 720 Associates initiated or renewed membership during
the year. They are one of The Institute's most precious assets and represent
a broad segment of the population of Texas. Membership dollars from
all nine membership categories are used to support the program itself
and to underwrite the cost of publishing books, producing audiovisuals
and fabricating traveling exhibits.
The Young Associates program for people under 40 completed its
second year with more than 100 members. One of their gatherings was
at Honey Creek Nature Conservancy and included nature hikes, hayrides,
a photography contest and frisbee playing.
The Ambassadors are a statewide network of volunteers who take
lTC's many services, programs and products to people around the state.
There are now more than 170 Ambassadors in 97 communities assisting
with Folklife Festival promotion and distributing information about ITC
products to community libraries and bookstores. Ambassadors are a
crucial link between the communities of Texas and The Institute.
The Heritage Tour program is a membership benefit of the Associates,
Alliance and Ambassador programs. The tours offer study adventures
for those interested in the cultural, environmental and social
diversity of Texas and her emigrants from other states and countries.

| Full Text | Like the rustic barn and tower of concrete depicted in the cover photo of the "Back 40;' The Institute of Texan Cultures is a mixture of the old and new, the timely and timeless. As a statewide learning and communication center, The Institute brings the story of Texas to life for the people of Texas to enjoy. Through its events, exhibits, research, programs and products, The Institute portrays the history and ~eritage of the state, always conscious of the ties between yesterday and today. Some 65,000 students and their instructors toured the exhibit floor for guided learning experiences, about a 25 percent increase from the year before. Others taking part in special events, tours and individual visits raised the total to about 390,000 people who saw our facility at first hand. Nearly a third of those visited during the very successful fourday Folklife Festival which annually helps Texans celebrate their rich history and culture. Staff members and costumed volunteers took Tex-Kit artifact collections and other educational programs throughout the state, reaching an additional 43,000 people in schools and adult groups. Traveling exhibits displayed in shopping malls, schools, museums, libraries, banks and corporations; and Institute teaching guides, books, pamphlets and audiovisual programs reached several hundred thousand Texans. Publications sales approached 14,000, and 2,500 audiovisual programs were purchased, spreading our unique educational experience even further. More than 720 Associates paid from $25 to $5,000 each to initiate or renew membership. The 325 local volunteers of the Alliance contributed more than 41,000 hours worth about $285,000. A statewide network of 170 Ambassadors helped spread our influence and programs throughout Texas, and rounded out membership roles to 1,215 people actively supporting us in our day-to-day operation and outreach. While members remain the core of our strength, academic research continues as the cornerstone of The Institute's educational excellence. Between 40 and 50 research projects were active throughout the year, serving as the basis for our products, allowing development and communication of our purpose as a multicultural education center. We took a major step toward even more efficiency with an operating computer system of 16 work stations and three printers. Our staff now may write, edit, file and communicate with each other electronically. A modern tool thus helps us to delve into our past-a fitting full circle in humanistic continuity. Although much of their cultural history remains relatively unavailable to some Texans, I am proud to report an entirely successful year, in which our mission was accomplished, our legislative mandate met and progress made toward this important end. Jack R. Maguire Executive Director 1 Visitation and Outreach This year The Institute of Texan Cultures was visited by 389,973 people demonstrating their interest in the multicultural heritage of Texas. School Tours ................................................ 64,703 Scout and Youth Tours ....... .. ... .................... 5,933 Adult Tour Groups................... ........ ...... ...... 12,852 General Public, Special Events ....................... 181,181 Handicapped.......................... ...................... 661 Day Care Centers ........................................ 3,179 Folklife Festival ... .......................................... 121,464 GRAND TOTAL 389,973 The Institute's active volunteer force-the Alliance, The Institute's own staff and the statewide Ambassador program helped take educational programs to 43,037 people in schools and communities throughout Texas. Outreach to Communities (adult groups) ........ 7,975 Outreach to Schools ...................................... 35,062 GRAND TOTAL 43,037 2 Educational Programs Texas history and folk cultures were portrayed for visitors with docent- and teacher-led participatory experiences. Innovative educators at The Institute of Texan Cultures were responsible for interpreting the exhibit floor and an outside area called the "Back 40:' Located on the southeast corner of The Institute's grounds, this area features permanent structures where visitors can relate to and experience various facets of early Texas life. A small one-room schoolhouse on the "Back 40" provides a graphic setting for in-depth teaching of what school was like in earlier days. Children can experience a spelling bee or el-o-cu-tion from real McGuffey's Readers or Webster's Blueback Spellers. The army fort headquarters building helps provide visitors a flashback in history of what the army contributed, and what it was like to be a soldier or in an army family in earlier days. Teachers may substitute a program which includes storytelling, toys and games of the era, according to age/grade level, utilizing the building and its grounds to provide historical perspective. A pioneer wagon interests most visitors, as does a new acquisition, the Texas barn exhibit, a building which adds considerable teaching potential. Plans for the barn include educational programs showing why it was the center of activity on the farm, and music, so that children can sample the pioneer's social gatherings. Currently, there are bales of hay for sitting, a salt lick to hold, bolls of cotton, ears of corn and some slightly gamey wool to handle. A plow and cultivator can be explored, and the sharper tools are safely hung on the walls to see. An operating windmill was also constructed last year, and a water tank is to be installed soon, completing the display. As the "Back 40" grows, it becomes an ever more important tool in helping The Institute to serve as a statewide educational communication center concerned with subjects relating to the history, culture and folklore of Texas. 3 I Traveling Exhibits The Institute of Texan Cultures reached hundreds of thousands of people in 65 cities across Texas and in other states through 129 Traveling Exhibit bookings. Every month of the year the exhibits put history and culture on display in schools, libraries, banks and shopping malls. New Traveling Exhibits include "Ranch Women: Roles, Images, Possibilities" and 'J!\. Spanish Bay in Early Texas" Traveling Trunk. "Children of Many Lands Came to Texas" was revised. Thirteen new exhibits are currently in the research and development stage. In fiscal 1983-1984, the 36 Traveling Exhibits produced by The Institute visited these cities: Angleton Farmers Branch Marshall Arlington Fort Worth Midland Atlanta Gainesville Nacogdoches Austin Galveston Palestine Bay City Giddings Pasadena Baytown Greenville Pearland Brownsville Groves Plano Brownwood Hamilton Round Rock Bryan Harlingen San Angelo Carrollton Henderson San Antonio College Station Hondo San Marcos Commerce Houston Seguin Copperas Cove Huntsville Spring Corpus Christi Jacksonville Temple Corsicana Jefferson Texas City Dallas Kingsville Vernon Del Rio La Porte Victoria Denton Laredo Waco Dumas Levelland Weatherford Edna Lufkin Wharton El Paso McAllen Yoakum Locations outside Texas include: Port Huron, Michigan, and Bloomingdale, Illinois. , L-----___-... ..J Ranch -Women Special Events The 13th Annual Texas Folklife Festival, The Institute's largest special learning event, was enjoyed by more than 121,000 visitors, participants and volunteers. Other year-round events attracted thousands of visitors to The Institute. They included Family Pioneer Day on the "Back 40"; IndiaAsia Dancers; cosponsoring with the San Antonio Zoo Louis DiSabato's lecture on Africa; a special Halloween "Spooky" Sunday; and the Smithsonian lectures, to name only a few. The Institute presented 38 Special Events in fiscal 1983-1984, including exhibit openings, lectures, workshops, and dramatic, ethnic and musical presentations. ~~~"'~~--~~~~~~~~ • \ I , I I' Publications and Audiovisuals The Institute of Texan Cultures sold 13,960 copies of its various publications. Its newest publication is Exploration in Texas: Ancient and Otherwise, With Thoughts on the Nature of Evidence, written by staff member Dr. John L. Davis. Several books are presently in production and will be on The Institute's shelves next fiscal year. The English Texans and The Japanese Texans will join The Institute's ethnic series. The English Texans explores the involvement of this ethnic group in settling Texas and in financing its development as well. The Japanese Texans is a narrative story of the first arrivals, colonial efforts, wartime troubles and the experiences of later generations. The Institute sold more than 2,500 audiovisual programs this year. The newest, Built in Texas, won a silver award in its category in the 1984 International Film & Television Festival of New York. Using historical photographs to show our progress from rock shelters and tip is to the bustling cities of the early 1900's, this informative new audiovisual gives a tour of Texas from small towns to urban centers. Coming up next fiscal year-Symbols of Texas. This audiovisual will meet the curriculum guidelines for social studies education set by the Texas Education Agency. Suggested audiences will be kindergarten through third grade students. Texas's numerous official and unofficial symbols will be presented and explained. Membership Programs The Alliance is the volunteer force without which The Institute could not function. This year, in support programs of lTC, more than 325 volunteers contributed 41,826.5 hours of their time with current market value of $284,420.20. They brought the history of Texas alive for thousands of schoolchildren and visitors from all over the world, assisted the curator with artifacts, worked with the Research Library and in the Store, managed information desks and supported the staff in almost every ITC department. Alliance members represented The Institute to the public, making their contributions of time and talents a crucial part of The Institute's success. More than 720 Associates initiated or renewed membership during the year. They are one of The Institute's most precious assets and represent a broad segment of the population of Texas. Membership dollars from all nine membership categories are used to support the program itself and to underwrite the cost of publishing books, producing audiovisuals and fabricating traveling exhibits. The Young Associates program for people under 40 completed its second year with more than 100 members. One of their gatherings was at Honey Creek Nature Conservancy and included nature hikes, hayrides, a photography contest and frisbee playing. The Ambassadors are a statewide network of volunteers who take lTC's many services, programs and products to people around the state. There are now more than 170 Ambassadors in 97 communities assisting with Folklife Festival promotion and distributing information about ITC products to community libraries and bookstores. Ambassadors are a crucial link between the communities of Texas and The Institute. The Heritage Tour program is a membership benefit of the Associates, Alliance and Ambassador programs. The tours offer study adventures for those interested in the cultural, environmental and social diversity of Texas and her emigrants from other states and countries. 9 '" I I i: : :: , i - I!
