Seize the Moment:
Selected Photographs from the Collection-1989
Anonymous faces are the peculiar
irony of many photograph collections.
The hundreds of thousands
of unidentified individuals whose
photographs fill libraries and archives
always tell viewers "You don't
know me;' even when the\ scene is
manifestly one of historical importance.
Who is the vendor sbnding
behind the stacks of tortilla~ll San
Antonio's Military Plaza in the
photograph [below 1 from the 1880's?
Where did he come from, and what
happened tohim the rest of the day,
the week, the year, which surrounded
the instant of the image? In a
photograph full of information
about buildings, clothing, objects
and everyday life, the fixed gaze of
the central subject himself teases the
curious. Surely he would never have
thought that he would be utterly
unknown, that his name would one
day be completely divorced from
this strong likeness.
Anonymity is an even more
prominent feature in many studio
photographs, where a subject poses
before a screen, resting a hand on
a chair or pedestal, or becomes a
disembodied bust floating on top of
a scroll or curlicue. The frailty of
historians' attempts to read "character"
into photographs of individuals
is exposed as make-believe
when the same strong facial lines
and prominent jaws and beetled
brows of famous persons appear in
unknown people who were just as
likely to have been weak, insignificant
and picayune. When a photograph
is the sum total of knowledge
about an individual, its significance
depends more on circumstancesthe
era to which it belongs, the subject's
clothing, the photographer behind
the camera - than on the subject.
When a person's life is known
in detail, a photograph may confirm
or deny certain information, but it
still represents only a moment.
Fortunately not all photographs
become separated from their subjects.
The major work of photo-graphic
collections like The Institute's
is preserving photographic
information: not only photographs,
but the information that helps reconstruct
the moment the photographer
snapped the shutter. This in
turn makes the photographs more
accessible to users.
In recognition of the 20-
year process of building The
Institute's photographic collections
and the construction of its
new cold-storage facility for
photographic negatives, a special
exhibit of selected items
from the collections will open in
February 1989.
"Seize the Moment: Selected
Photographs from the Collection,
1989" will showcase images
representing the wide range of
items from the San Antonio
Light collection, the Jimmie
Zintgraff collection and the
Institute collection.

TEXANS * • A Story of Texan Cultures for Young People.
Barbara Evans Stanush
Through fascinating glimpses of 15 ethnic
groups settling the wild frontier of Texas - or
finding a place in modern society- this new book
presents to children a wonderful introduction to
Texas history.
Each chapter gives a little of the backgrounds,
traditions and lifestyles of ethnic groups ranging
from the Indian and Spanish to the German, Greek
and Chinese. Children will enjoy the cross-cultural
similarities and identify with the games and customs
of other peoples. The book presents a variety
of activities, so that children can playa Vietnamese
game, have a Cajun party, cook Czech noodles,
write a Japanese poem and make Polish paper cuttings.
A teacher's guide is available with additional
activities, extended information and teaching aids.

Pages from the chapter on Indian Texans
During our first 20 years The Institute has
made a significant contribution to the state. We
have informed thousands of people about the
cultural diversity of Texas and how that diversity
has contributed to the history of Texas. In the
process we have helped overcome the stereotyped
image of Texans. We emphasize to everyonewhether
it be a four-year-old child or an BO-yearold
man - that Texans came from all across the
world at diHerent times and for diHerent reasons
to settle here, and as communities or as individuals
they contributed to today's sodety in Texas.
John McGiffert, Executive Director
In this 20th anniversary year we honored those who
helped to make The Institute a reality, and we worked
to refine our current focus and consider our direction
for the future.
For two decades The Institute's mission has remained
the same: to recognize the diversity of Texas
people and foster public knowledge and appreciation
of their history and culture as valuable assets for all
Texans. The various ways in which we interpret and
express our mission have evolved and changed over the
years as we faced the challenge of conveying our message
to the diverse peoples of Texas. The strides we made
during 1987 and 1988 reflect our continuing efforts to
meet that challenge.
Research concerning Hungarian, Spanish and Mexican
Texans, textile and adobe building traditions, and
historic photographs, strengthened our links with various
cultural groups and communities in the state. Our
relationship with teachers was enhanced through the
Institute on Texas History and Culture workshops which
again received enthusiastic responses. And the number
of schoolchildren we reached grew tremendously with
our expanded Tex-Kit program presented by Institute
docents and Ambassadors to schools and community
groups throughout the state.
The effectiveness of The Institute's reach throughout
Texas is also evident in the results of our development
efforts, a renewed interest in the membership
program, increased attendance at the annual Texas
Folklife Festival a:nd the continued vitality of our
volunteer programs.
While reviewing the past and planning for the
future, we worked to improve our internal coordination
and developed a preliminary conceptual approach for
our exhibits. These were the starting points in a planning
process which will consume much of our energy for
several years to come.
Our challenge for the future is even greater than
it has been in the past, and the ways we communicate
our message must continue to evolve. New groups and
individuals arrive each day to make Texas their home.
As with all.those who came before them, their contributions
enrich the cultural life of Texas. Conducting the
research, locating the resources and developing the
programs necessary to encompass these groups will
require persistence, endurance, sensitivity and creativity.
But we accept the challenge, and we will continue
working to tell the story of Texas and Texans in meaningful
and relevant ways.
Research and Collections
The focus of our research is the diverse
peoples of Texas and their need to express what
they are and what they have been. By going to
a community, documenting it in a variety of
ways and making that information available to
the public through all of our sources, The Institute
becomes a communication center in fact as
well as in name. ~ link people in neighborhoods
and ethnic communities across the state, which
are part of Texas history and its contemporary
scene, to the public at large. In some ways,
through us they express themselves. In other
ways, we manage to preserve a little bit of the
cultural life we find in these communities for
people who will come later.
Dr. Jim McNutt,
Director of Research and Collections

Research activities during 1987-88 included continued
work with such groups as Hungarian, Spanish and
Mexican Texans. From these research efforts we plan to
publish several books, produce an exhibit concerning
the history and contributions of Hungarian Texans, and
revise the Mexican and Spanish exhibits. We will also
produce a traveling exhibit which explores the many
forces involved in creating the early San Antonio community.
In October 1987 The Institute held a public
discussion on the same topic entitled The 18th Century
Origins of the Tejano Community of San Antonio which
was well attended and received. Publication of the conference
presentations is nearing completion.
Through the summer intern program, extensive research
was also conducted concerning the traditional life
of Mexican-American Texans in the border region of
west Texas and the history and development of textiles
in the state. Information gathered in the border region
will form the basis of interpretive programming for the
recently completed adobe building in The Institute's
"Back 40" exhibit area and a video production focusing
on the history of adobe and the traditions of the people
in the area. The data on textiles in Texas will be incorporated
in a revised spinning and weaving interpretive
area on the main exhibit floor and may result in other
products and programming in the future.
Resources developed in the last year include the
Library's historic photograph collection, which was increased
by more than half a million images with the
acquisition of the files of photographer Jimmie Zintgraff

and additional years of the San Antonio Light Collection.
Construction is currently under way on a new cold.
storage area to house the expanded collection. With
assistance from Institute Ambassadors, the oral history
program conducted new interviews in such communities
as Fredericksburg, Comfort, Weimar, Nacogdoches,
Somerset-Atascosa County and others. Several interviews
with Texas Folklife Festival participants were also
added to the collection.
Other research activities and accomplishments during
1987-88 were: cosponsorship of Native Americans
and Mexican Indigenas: A Comparative Seminar with
the Universidad Nacional Aut6noma de Mexico, several
presentations by various staff members at professional
conferences throughout the year, and a Fulbright Scholarship
granted to Research Associate Dr. Gerald Poyo
for teaching and study in Argentina.
Two major additions were made in the area of exhibits
this past year. A mural depicting Caddo Indian
life was installed in the Indians of Texas exhibit. The
first of three such murals to be incorporated as part of
the revision of this area, the life-size scene of a Caddo
community has added a striking dimension.
Volunteer Elizabeth Schwartz discusses Caddo Indian culture
with school students in front of the new mural.
Also completed during the year was the adobe
building in the "Back 40" exhibit area. Workers traveled
from Presidio to construct the authentic two-room
dwelling. Representative of the structures which dominated
the scene in the border region of west Texas at
the turn of the century, the building was constructed
with adobe bricks made in the Presidio area and vigas,
or roofbeams, salvaged from a 1927-vintage adobe
building in Redford. Interpretive programming focusing
on the lifeways of Mexican Americans in the border area
is being developed and will be presented at the adobe
building as part of the "Back 40" programs.
In addition, The Institute presented eight special ~
exhibits during the year, including the in-house produc- )

Programs
The Institute's educational philosophy is
based on direct interaction between the visitor
or student and the presenter. l1i! want to involve
people in the learning process, and we want that
process to continue. ~ hope that when visitors
leave The Institute they will be exdted about the
experience of Texans. We also hope that we have
inspired them to want to learn more.
Bonnie Truax, Director of Educational Programs
Interpretive presentations on the exhibit floor and
in the "Back 40;' as well as through the Tex-Kit program
and the TI-IN network, remained an important part
of The Institute's programming this past year.
More than 70,000 students and adults learned
about Texas history and culture through structured
tours of the exhibits. For the second year The Institute's
"Back 40" exhibits were open daily to the general public
during the months of June and July. Hundreds of people
enjoyed interpretive presentations at the one-room
schoolhouse, barn and fo rt, augmented this year with
special hands-on activities.
One aspect of The Institute's educational programming
which experienced tremendous growth was the
Tex-Kit program. Tex-Kits are presentations on various

topics related to Texas, which feature photos and reproduction
artifacts. This year, in addition to the crew of
volunteers who cover the Bexar County area, several
Ambassadors began presenting kits to schools and
community groups in their local areas, increasing the
number of people reached through the program by
nearly 2S percent.
Thousands of students and educators across Texas
also viewed classroom enrichment and teacher-training
presentations focusing on various topics related to Texas
through the TI-IN network. TI-IN is a satellite transmission
system which provides resources to subscribing

school districts throughout the state. Programs were
broadcast dealing with such subjects as Texas Indians,
Japanese culture, cowboy life, spinning and weaving,
and folklore in the classroom.
Teachers from various areas in Texas enhanced their
knowledge and skills through special Institute programs.
The workshops for fourth- and seventh-grade teachers
held each summer were filled to capacity this year, and
more than 100 applicants were placed on the waiting
list for next year's sessions.

Several colleges and universities incorporated segments
presented by Institute personnel into their coursework.
Student teachers, librarians and graduate students
from St. Mary's University in San Antonio, The University
of Texas at Tyler, Texas A&M in College Station,
Huston-Tillotson College in Austin, Texas Woman's
University in Denton and Southwest Texas State University
in San Marcos received social studies methods
training through such presentations this year.
In addition, The Institute's Educational Programs
staff worked closely with students from The University
of Texas at San Antonio in relation to the course "Conceptual
Approaches to Teaching in the Elementary
School:' As part of the course requirements, students
completed eight hours of fieldwork at The Institute,

focusing on several of the interpretive areas, and developed
classroom and interpretive presentations based on
their work.
Other programs and special events produced during
the year include the ever-popular Texas Folklife
Festival, the Winter Holiday Extravaganza and the Bowie
Street Blues concert.
The 17th Annual Texas Folklife Festival exhibited
a slightly different look with several new additions this
year. Demolition of two old HemisFair structures provided
space for 24 new participants and a lot more
"elbow room" for Festival-goers. Nearly 110,000 visitors,
the second-largest crowd on record, attended this year's
event to enjoy the food, music, dancing and crafts. Many
Festival visitors also had the opportunity to participate
in some good old Texas mud-slinging as they tried their
hands at plastering the new adobe building in the "Back
40" area.
One gray winter day in December found a bright
spot at The Institute when the second annual Winter
Holiday Extravaganza celebrated the season. Fifteen
different ethnic groups who also participate in the
Folklife Festival presented their traditional foods and
displayed holiday crafts for the 300 people who attended
the event.
In April The Institute's Bowie Street Blues concert
swung into action as part of San Antonio's Fiesta celebration.
Jointly underwritten by Halo Distributing
Company .and KZEP Radio, the event featured such
Texas blues artists as Erbie Bowser, T.D. Bell, Pete
Mayes, Big Roger Collins and Johnny Copeland.

Products and Services
More than 7,600 copies of The Institute's books and
1,
pamphlets and 700 copies of our audiovisual programs 1
were sold during 1987-88. Work also proceeded on ;)
several publications. The Hungarian Texans, The Swed- ,Ii
ish Texans and the Bexar Archives: A Name Guide, are
nearing completion. The Lebanese Texans and the Syrian
Texans pamphlet is soon to be released. And just out
is an exciting new book for younger readers, Texans:
The Story of Texan Cultures for Young People.
Other publications in progress include a revision
of The Texas Rangers, pamphlets detailing the history
and contributions of Japanese and Indian Texans, and
new books on such topics as Spanish Colonial Texas and
the origins of the early San Antonio community.
'With renewed enthusiasm" best describes how
schools, banks, malls and libraries greeted The Institute's
traveling exhibits and trunks this year. After feeling the
effects of a troubled Texas economy, we enjoyed a
sudden upturn in reservations in the spring of 1988 as
money became less restricted. The fiscal year ended with
a total of 166 bookings in 70 different cities, an 8.5
percent increase over the previous year's rentals.
Also two new titles were added to our list of traveling
exhibits. What They Say about Texas features
quotations reflecting the thoughts and observations of
some of the notable travelers who have visited Texas
over the years. From eloquent descriptions of Texas's
beauty, romance and mystery to caustic comments about
its unpredictable weather and undesirable characters,
the exhibit presents an intriguing view of the state as
seen through the eyes and minds of such famous visitors
as David Crockett, Sidney Lanier, Oscar Wilde, Georgia
O'Keeffe, Will Rogers, John Steinbeck and Lillie Langtry.
The Institute originally produced the second new
traveling exhibit, Lone Star and Eagle: German Immigration
to Texas for the Goethe-Institute of Houston,
who donated it to us this year. The exhibit was refurbished
and displayed throughout the summer in the
Stadtbibliothek (City Library) of Mainz, Germany.
Institute services continued to improve and expand
during 1987-88 in several areas. With four new items
of equipment, the Production Division increased its
capabilities and reduced production time for both Institute
Rrojects and outside contracts. In the Library a
major organizing effort was begun to catalog the newly
acquired Zintgraff and San Antonio Light collections.
Work also progressed on a computerized catalog system
which will make the photo files more accessible. Library
visits increased this year, and photo orders reached
record numbers.
Event reservations during 1987-88 included 40
bookings by convention groups visiting San Antonio
and special receptions honoring the King and Queen
of Spain, Luciano Pavarotti and the Bolshoi Ballet. The
Institute hosted outside groups for numerous other
events such as lectures, public hearings, teleconferences,
business meetings and the monthly naturalization ceremony
directed by the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization
Service.
Development
The Development program at The Institute
is not just carried out by Development staff. The
people most adept at producing funds for programs
are the project directors themselves. We
work with them to guide their efforts by identifying
possible sources and preparing applications/
but the persons responsible for the projects are
the most appropriate and credible sources of
information. Some of our best fund-raisers are
not in this office/ and thafs the way it should be.
- Hugh Moore, Director of Development
In 1987-88 Institute gifts and grants amounted to
more than $819,000, far exceeding the total for any previous
year: Nearly $361,000 was received in cash and
checks, while gifts-in-kind of materials and services were
valued at $458,000. This generosity from supporters
throughout Texas allowed many advances and improvements
which would not otherwise have been possible.
Photo Collections: John H. and Dela White of
San Antonio provided the funds to acquire the Zintgraff
photos, a collection of approximately 475,000
images documenting San Antonio and Texas history
from the 1920's. Another $27,000 was received from
the H.B. Zachry Foundation to purchase associated
equipment from the Zintgraff studio. The San Antonio
Light newspaper also donated an estimated
250,000 images published between 1940 and 1960,
adding to their previous contribution of photos
published before 1940. Additional funds are needed
to cover the costs of cataloging, protecting and
storing the images.
"Back 40" Exhibits: The United Services Automobile
Association (USAA) provided a $25,000
boost for "Back 40" exhibits and activities including
interpreters for the summer months and future
construction of a log building.
Teachers' Workshops: Advisory Board member
Rhoda Stefan and husband Fred provided funds and
arranged for matching monies to sponsor the 1989
Institute on Texas History and Culture workshops
for fourth- and seventh-grade teachers. Mr. and Mrs.
Patrick J. Welder sponsored one of the teachers
attending the 1988 workshop.
9
Texas Folklife Festival: The H.B. Zachry Construction
Company annually provides several fulltime
electricians to help prepare for the Festival.
These services have amounted to nearly $20,000 in
the last three years alone. In 1988 four electricians
worked a total of hours equivalent to a $6,384 contribution.
This year the Zachry company also provided
the Festival with a trailer to aid on-grounds
supply and maintenance.
Development Board member Claudia Ball and
her husband, Judge T. Armour Ball, established the
Nano Ball Pioneer Area Fund in honor of their son,
William Armour Ball. More than $1,700 was contributed
this year by various friends of the Festival
toward a goal of $10,000, which will qualify the fund
as an endowment. Proceeds from the endowment
will be used to support Festival activities.
New Festival participants from the Guadalupe County Pecan
Growers Association display their award-winning praline.
Ferguson Map Company, Ferguson Cartographic
Technologies, Inc., and Ultragraphics donated
design and printing services worth $14,000 for the
Folklife Festival Visitor's Guide, and USAA provided
$9,000 to cover the printing costs.
Other contributions to the Folklife Festival of
$500 or more included a cash gift from Southwestern
Bell Telephone Co. and in-kind contributions from
the Marriott RiverWalk Hotel, Utopia Water Company,
Don Strange Catering, Pioneer Flour Mills,
San Antonio Savings Association, Kallison's Farm
and Ranch, Texas Highway Department and Alamo
Iron Works. '
Tejano Community in San Antonio Project:
The Texas Committee for the Humanities matched
previous private donations with $7,500 for the Tejano
Community in San Antonio project. Valero
Energy Corporation also cont.ributed $500.
Hungarian Texans: The Minnie Stevens Piper
Foundation, the .Franz Liszt ' Foundation of the
Americas, the Hungarian Society of Texas, Mr.
Michael Balint and an anonymous donor gave a
total of $4,500 in support of the forthcoming publication
and exhibit concerning the history and
contributions of Hungarian Texans.

H.B. Zachry Plaza: Mr. Marshall T. Steves Sr.,
Mrs. H.B. (Polly) Zachry and other members of the
HemisFair Executive Committee raised more than
$1,000 for the dedication, in conjunction with the
20th anniversary celebration, of The Institute's
flagpole area as H.B. Zachry Plaza. The valuable
contributions made to The Institute by H.B. (Pat)
Zachry over the past 20 years are commemorated
by a permanent marker and plaque placed in the
new plaza.

H.B. (Pat) Zachry during the 20th anniversary celebration.
Bowie Street Blues Concert: Halo Distributing
Company of San Antonio contributed $10,000 to
underwrite the Bowie Street Blues concert held in
conjunction with San Antonio's Fiesta in April.
Endowments and Memorials: The Pat and Jack
Maguire Outreach Endowment Fund grew by $1,300
this year, raising the total amount to more than
$58,000. The Maguire Alliance Endowment, established
to support Institute volunteer programs, grew
by $675 and now totals more than $23,000. Memorials
and remembrances for 1987-88 amounted to
$465, which aided in the purchase of books and
other resources for The Institute's Research Library.
Other Gifts and Donations: Unrestricted gifts,
which meet a variety of needs, including production
of publications, were made by the Houston Endowment,
Inc. ($20,000), the Strake Foundation ($1,000)
and the Roland and Jane Blumberg Foundations
($500). Exhibit floor visitor donations totaled
$39,891 for 1987-88.
Individual donations of $500 or more were
made by Mr. and Mrs. Reagan T. Houston III, Mr.
and Mrs. James D()yle, Miss Josephine Sparks, The
Frost Family of Banks, Mr. and Mrs. Robert A.
Buschman, Mr. Bartlett Cocke Sr., Mrs. Jean Kaspar,
N.B. Ventures of California, the Semmes Foundation
and Mr. William P. Wright Jr. These funds supported
a variety of programs and projects. J
Contributions were also made by the Amy /'
Shelton McNutt Trust to the oral history program
in honor of Institute Advisory Board member Stew-
art C. Johnson ($1,000) and by the Ewing Halsell
Foundation for the Jose Cisneros exhibit ($1,000).
The National Endowment for the Arts also paid
$1,525 in final funds for a previous project, Handicapped
Interns.
In addition, material and service gifts were
contributed for various projects. They include: two
sets of the traveling exhibit Texas Women: A
Celebration of History from the Foundation for
Women's Resources; airline tickets for staff travel
related to the State Fair of Texas exhibition from
Southwest Airlines; transportation of the adobe
bricks from Presidio to San Antonio by the Southern
Pacific and Atcheson, Topeka and Santa Fe railroads;
admission tickets for the Labor Day Weekend
races from the Alamo Grand Prix Association for
use in the joint fund-raising efforts of The Institute
and the Downtown Rotary Club of San Antonio;
a public service billboard promoting Institute
visitation produced and displayed by Reagan National
Advertising; and books presented to the
Research Library by several donors.

Fund-raising Eventl Alamo Grand Prix: A new
San Antonio recreational event presented The Institute
with a challenge and an opportunity for Labor
Day Weekend 1987. The course for the Alamo
Grand Prix surrounded The Institute and isolated
us from the general public, but our grassy berms
offered some of the best views of the race. In partnership
with the Downtown Rotary Club of San
Antonio, The Institute developed a joint fund-raising
effort as part of the Grand Prix events. Fifty spaces
on the Bowie Street berm were sold to local businesses
and corporations, who sponsored them for
their employees and customers. Food and drinks
were also sold on The Institute's grounds. Proceeds
from these efforts netted The Institute and the
Rotary Club nearly $9,000 each. Institute funds supported
various programs and projects, while the
Rotary funds benefited Polio Plus, a project to immunize
the world against polio.
The marketing and memberships aspects of our
development program also made great strides during
the year. Marketing efforts were enhanced by an expanded
presence at conventions and seminars throughout
the state and at the annual State Fair of Texas in
,~
Part of the Institute display at the State Fair of Texas
Dallas. New initiatives included a public service billboard,
taxi signs and a segment incorporated in a video
postcard of San Antonio, all of which were designed to
promote Institute visitation; a new print promotion for
the Texas FQlklife Festival produced through the San
Antonio Express-News; and a survey developed to provide
more information about our visitors.
More than 200 new members joined The Institute
during the year to enjoy the benefits of a reorganized
and improved program. Total dues generated for new
members and renewals exceeded $34,000. An important
membership activity reintroduced this year was the
Heritage Tour Program, revamped to concentrate on oneday
trips featuring various aspects of Texas history and
culture. The new approach and reduced cost of tours
was greeted with enthusiasm, and all seven tours held
in 1988 were filled to capacity. Another new activity,
'Adobe Day;' was held for members during the summer.
The event offered them an opportunity to learn about
the history and techniques of adobe building and see
the new "Back 40" building under construction.

Staff and volunteers continued to work diligently
throughout the year to produce and promote The Institute's
many products and programs. New faces for
1987-88 among the staff included Leslie Burns, director
of audiovisual production, and John Minton, research
associate. Minton replaced Melvin Sance, a longtime
Institute researcher who retired this year.

Our 194 Ambassadors located throughout the state
also provided important support services. More Ambassadors
began presenting Tex-Kits in their local areas
this year, reaching thousands of Texans. Others gave
craft demonstrations at fairs and festivals, conducted
interviews for the oral history program, distributed
Institute and Folklife Festival promotional materials, and
introduced new products and services to schools and
libraries in their areas. The first annual Ambassador
Appreciation Day was held in May to honor the program's
participants for their hard work and accomplishments
throughout the year in The Institute's behalf.
One of The Institute's most vital support groups
is the 400-member core of volunteers, the Alliance. More
than 47,000 hours - equivalent to a $472,340 donationwere
contributed during the year by volunteers who
served as exhibit floor tour guides and interpreters,
