THE INSTITUTE OF TEXAN
CULTURES IS ...
The Texas Experience
Yesterday, Today, Tomorrow
People from all over the world have come to settle in
Texas, bringing with them elements of their own heritage.
Today the state brims with the culture, traditions
and folklore of these people. They have given Texas an
exciting story to tell, and The Institute of Texan Cultures
brings this story to life. The Institute and its activities
portray and interpret the adventures, hardships and
accomplishments of the people who developed the
state - from the legendary figures and dauntless settlers
of yesteryear to modern-day pioneers. Through its
exhibits, events, programs and products The Institute
blends education and entertainment into an enjoyable
learning experience - The Texas Experience.
· Highlights
Texans and visitors to the state continued to show great
interest in Institute products and services during the
year. Tours of adults and children increased, as did visits
by the general public, despite major construction in the
area which disrupted access to HemisFair Plaza. Educational
programs staff members and volunteers expanded
their outreach audience by more than 50 percent with
visits to classrooms, nursing homes and miscellaneous
gatherings. New pamphIets, books, audiovisuals and
exhibits were developed, rental of traveling exhibits increased,
and more than 12,000 publications and 2,000
audiovisual products were sold.

To Our Membership:
From the Executive Director
The year brought alignment with The University of
Texas at San Antonio and new opportunities for both
organizations. Several administrative functions were
combined, reducing costs and offering the prospect of
new initiatives and achievements.
Perhaps the most ambitious undertaking in The Institute's
history was the development and presentation of
our Sesquicentennial exhibit, Reach for the Sky: Aviation
in Texas, made possible by a grant from Southwest Airlines.
Nearly three years of research and production went
into the project, and virtually every department and
hundreds of volunteers contributed to the effort. The
exhibit opened October 27, 1985, and was a popular attraction
throughout the seven months' showing. A variety
of educational programs was featured monthly in conjunction
with Reach for the Sky, and small exhibits were
placed in airport terminals throughout Texas. A traveling
version was completed and made available for display
in schools, libraries and other locations as requested.
A second new traveling exhibit, The Greeks in Texas: A
Proud Heritage, was produced, and Mexican Folk Toys was
redesigned and rebuilt. On the main exhibit floor the
Filipino Texans Area was permanently installed, and the
new Introductory Area neared completion at year-end.
The special exhibits program continued with the presentation
of four excellent shows in our small galleries.
During the summer, as part of our expanding educational
role, the Educational Programs department conducted
its second annual workshop for fourth and
seventh grade teachers, the Institute on Texas History
and Culture, with almost double the students of the
previous year. On-site teacher-training sessions continued
during the school year when requested by schools
and districts. In addition, a new teacher-training program
was begun which utilized a statewide interactive
television/telephone network. A new Teacher's Guide to The
Institute of Texan Cultures was developed and published to
help teachers correlate their Institute visits with curriculum
requirements. Our expanding role in higher education
will continue during the coming year, with
Institute staff and UTSA faculty cooperating in a new
course for senior undergraduate student teachers.
4
These 1986 activities stretched the capability of our
educational staff and Alliance volunteers, who handled
more than 74,000 visiting schoolchildren on the exhibit
floor, an increase of 14 percent. They also reached out
to 46,537 other children in their classrooms with TexKit
presentations, an increase of 32 percent! This latter
statistic indicates a phenomenal achievement by a handful
of staff members and volunteers. Most of these children
were within 50 miles of San Antonio, but as more
Ambassadors were trained, more Tex-Kits developed and
more classes presented on the interactive video network,
the reach ofInstitute programs expanded to more schoolrooms
in diverse areas of the state.
Of course, other volunteers continued to assist our
administrative, library, research, Store and curatorial
staffs with careful, consistent and talented efforts. I am
vastly proud of the dedicated work of all our wonderful
volunteers. They are vital to our operations, and without
them our programs would falter and die.
The 15th Annual Texas Folklife Festival was certainly
one of the best ever with 90,000 visitors, although for
the first time in many years it was not a financial success.
It was very hot (over 100 degrees every day), the economy
was faltering, and there was extensive construction in
the area which made it difficult to get to the gates. The
participants were in great form and humor, however, and
I was pleased to see large numbers offamilies with children
enjoying the activities. The Festival staff is working
hard to trim future costs and increase revenues, and I
am confident that financial viability will return in 1987.
These accomplishments are impressive and generate
pride in the hundreds of volunteers and staff members
who worked long and hard to make them happen. Our
people give freely of themselves and demand little in
return, working behind the scenes without fanfare or
public recognition. Their tremendous personal contribution
represents a unique and valuable gift for the people
of Texas.

We Reach the People
And They Listen,
Experience and Learn
This year 392,963 people visited The Institute to study
Texas's multicultural heritage. On the exhibit floor and
during Folklife Festival interpreters explained various
aspects of life in early Texas. Visitors touched and
handled artifacts in interpretive areas and learned about
the lives and contributions of the many ethnic and
cultural groups that make up Texas today.

We Research
The Institute is a valuable resource center for authors,
scholars, students and teachers alike. Our research staff
conducts archival and field research, and stays in touch
with a wide network of scholars in other university
components. Nationally known scholars from a variety
of disciplines contract to perform additional Institute
research. An expanding Oral History Program has
developed a collection of taped and transcribed interviews
with a wide-ranging variety of Texans. Under our
summer internship program, graduate students make
forays across the state in search of community folklife
to be featured in Institute programs. Research ultimately
serves as the foundation for all of our programmingpublications,
exhibits, special events, educational programs
and audiovisuals.
Completed research in 1985-1986 resulted in two new
major exhibits, one on aviation and another on Filipino
Texans; a traveling exhibit on Greek Texans, and a
publication and Folklife Festival presentation concerning
Afro-American communities in Houston.
To facilitate scholarly research in Texas history and folk
culture, our noncirculating reference library serves the
research needs of the Institute staff, Associates, Alliance,
Ambassadors, students, teachers and the general public.
The library contains a large historic photograph collection
as well as books, periodicals, vertical files and
audiovisual materials. Many photographs in the collection
are copies of the earliest-known images of Texas.
More than 500 photos were added during the year, 300
of these covering the early history of Japanese Texans.
Copies of most of our historic photographs, paintings,
engravings and maps can be purchased.
7
We Teach
At The Institute we help students see Texas history as
something that is alive and meaningful by having them
take an active role in learning. To do this we use the
inquiry approach. Instead of simply providing data, we
encourage students to ask and answer their own questions.
We also gain their participation in interpretive
areas which are interwoven with our exhibits and focus
on various aspects of life in Texas. For example, youngsters
can sit down at our chuck wagon to experience
firsthand how cowboys worked and lived. Interpreters
at this and other interpretive areas share their knowledge
while the kids handle artifacts, ask questions and, in
some small way, develop a feeling of having "lived" a
memorable personal experience. It's fun and educational
too. Before they realize it, students have learned something
about Texas history.
This year more than ever before Texas educators recognized
the benefits of our teaching methods and incorporated
them into their history curricula.
In 1985-1986 we conducted two sessions of our Institute
on Texas History and Culture for teachers. These two-week
workshops provided fourth and seventh grade teachers
with new and innovative strategies for teaching Texas
history. Teachers learned more about the people who
settled Texas, and they used our instructional techniques
to develop new lesson plans. Library resources and many
of our products were also utilized. Lesson plans were
shared with other workshop members and then taken
back to schools across Texas for use in many classrooms.
Similar teacher-training workshops were also presented
to hundreds of teachers through TI-IN, a statewide
interactive television network, and to several in-service
8
teachers' seminars through which we reached more than
160 teachers. Another 270 history teachers saw our
presentations at workshops and conferences such as the
Texas State Historical Association's History Awareness
Workshop and the Texas State Council for the Social
Studies Conference.
More than 90 University of Texas at San Antonio
education students enrolled in social studies methods
courses visited the exhibit floor to observe our teaching
techniques this year. Their experience proved so valuable
that UTSA incorporated mandatory exhibit floor teaching
experience into the 1986-1987 history methods curriculum.
An additional 258 education majors from
various Texas colleges and universities also received
extensive briefings and demonstrations prior to and
during their scheduled tours.
Thousands of educational tours to The Institute were
provided for preschool, elementary and middle school
groups during 1985-1986. Our outdoor "Back 40" educational
activities dramatically increased this year because
of new tour-scheduling initiatives. Half of the students
in many tour groups now visit our exhibit floor while
the others visit the "Back 40." Schedules are then reversed
during the second half of the tour, allowing all students
. to experience both indoor and outdoor exhibit areas.
The outdoor area includes interpretive centers such as
a one-room schoolhouse, a barn and windmill, and a
cavalry fort headquarters. Students write on slates and
read from McGuffey's Readers in the schoolhouse, discover
the importance to early settlers of water and windmills,
and learn what life was like at a frontier fort.
In our continuing effort to serve Texans with special
educational needs, we are currently training volunteers
to provide exhibit tours for the hearing-impaired.
Educational programs supporting this year's aviation
exhibit included activities such as kite and paper airplane
making and flying, storytelling on the exhibit floor, an
aviation-related contest for seventh grade students and
production of "in-flight games" for use by children
aboard Southwest Airlines' flights. Visitors also enjoyed
our aviation guest speakers, films, puppet shows and
special demonstrations by the Confederate Air Force and
the San Antonio Hot Air Balloon Club.
9
We Exhibit
Institute visitors enjoyed a bonanza of new exhibits
during the year, beginning with our Sesquicentennial
production of Reach for the Sky: Aviation in Texas. In the
planning stages for three years, this exhibit required the
skills of virtually every department to produce the most
ambitious single effort in The Institute's history.
Reach for the Sky: Aviation in Texas (October 27,
1985, through June 8, 1986) was made possible through
a grant from Southwest Airlines. Tracing Texas's role in
the history of aviation from Jacob Brodbeck to the
announcement that "the Eagle has landed;' this exhibit
brought together all aspects of The Institute in public
presentations. It was highlighted by artifacts such as a
World War I Curtiss IN-4 'Jenny" biplane borrowed
from the San Antonio Museum Association and a series
of Institute-produced audiovisual presentations. The
exhibit was developed by the Research, Exhibits, Art and
Fabrication departments, with assistance from two
prominent aviation historians and many other organizations
and institutions.
In addition, a select group of other special exhibits was
presented to our visitors.
Black Wings: The American Black in Aviation (February
1 through March 11, 1986) was a production of
the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibits Services
brought to The Institute in celebration of Black History
Month. This was the second consecutive year that The
Institute presented special exhibits and activities during
Black History Month. Although early aviation was
generally the realm of white males, blacks also made
important contributions, including a Texas woman
aviator trained in France. This exhibit celebrated the
achievements of these people.
10
Forgotten Dignity: A Photographic History 1880-1930
(February 4 through March 7, 1986) featured the rural
black community of Bonham, Texas. Striking and poignant
photographs brought turn-of-the-century Bonham
back to life again. Forgotten Dignity was produced in 1984
by East Texas State University and made its second
appearance at The Institute for Black History Month
in 1986.
The Spanish Colonization in Texas: Its Settlements
and Architecture (April 15 through June 15, 1986) was
a collaborative project between The Institute of Texan
Cultures and Texas A&M University. This production
was made possible by a grant from the government of
Spain and focused on Spanish Colonial architecture in
Texas. Stunning photo murals and interesting maps
highlighted this study of Spanish heritage in Texas.
Texas Lithographs (August 19 through October 5, 1986)
was a Sesquicentennial project of the Amon Carter
Museum. The exhibit included more than 60 19th century
lithographs, a medium which became vitally important
in the early part of that century. Mid-19th century
bird's-eye views of Texas cities and dramatic renderings
of events such as the 1900 Galveston tidal wave highlighted
the exhibit. The Institute assisted in exhibit
development and was one of only three display locations.
The Filipino Area was reinstalled on the main exhibit
floor. It tells the story of this relatively small group of
immigrants. Although a Filipino cabin boy named Francisco
Flores established a fishing business at Port Isabel
in 1822, major Filipino immigration did not occur until
after World War II. The achievements and contributions
of Flores and other Filipinos to the growth and development
of the state are highlighted in the new exhibit amid
colorful and intriguing objects of Filipino culture.
By the end of the fiscal year we were preparing to install
a new Introductory Area made possible by gifts from Mr.
and Mrs. 0. Scott Petty and Mr. and Mrs. Scott Petty
Jr. and family. Highlighted by a six-foot geophysical
globe, the area introduces the visitor to The Institute.
This exhibit asks visitors to think about how past cultures
may affect their lives today.
Research and design for the Indian Area was well under
way by year-end. The rich and diverse heritage of Indian
Texans will be presented through exciting new murals,
interpretive areas and audiovisuals.

We Travel
The Institute reaches out to all Texans, We now have '
37 traveling exhibits and 18 traveling trunks on 23 sepa- II
rate subjects designed for use in schools, libraries, museums,
banks, malls and other public spaces. These prod- ,
ucts are so popular that most are booked several months I
in advance. In 1985-1986 hundreds of thousands ofl
people saw our exhibits and used our traveling trunks '
through 206 bookings in 80 cities across Texas and in
Colorado. Five exhibits traveled to Norway.
Ten small exhibits incorporating material from the major
exhibit Reach for the Sky: Aviation in Texas were produced
for Southwest Airlines for display in ten Texas airport
terminals. A traveling exhibit version was then completed
and made available for display around the state.
Other traveling exhibits produced this year were The
Greeks in Texas: A Proud Heritage and a redesigned and
rebuilt Mexican Folk Toys in both wall-hanging and freestanding
formats. The Institute also fabricated special
exhibits for Texas Tech, Texas A&M University and
Randolph Air Force Base.
Teachers allover Texas use our traveling trunks to involve
their students in historic subjects. Traveling trunks are
hands-on teaching tools containing artifacts, games,
vocabulary cards, teacher's guides, books, filmstrips and
much more on various topics in Texas history. Our latest
traveling trunk, Cowboys and Cattle Drives, is designed to
teach about the life of the American cowboy during cattle
drives. Cowboys and Cattle Drives received the Museum
Service Award for most outstanding educational pro- .
gram in 1985 by the Texas Historical Commission.
Volunteers and staff members used our Tex-Kits to teach
Texas history to 58,276 persons in schools, clubs and
nursing homes throughout the state. Tex-Kits are smaller
than traveling trunks, address broader topics and are
presented by staff, docents or Ambassadors. The subject
of our latest Tex-Kit is Texas aviation.
12
We Conduct Special Events ...
The 15th Annual Texas Folklife Festival, The Institute's
largest special event, brought together volunteer workers
and participants to demonstrate their pioneer crafts and
share ethnic traditions with 90,000 visitors. Despite
unusually intense heat and the presence of major construction
projects all around HemisFair Plaza, the Festival
attracted large numbers of families who enthusiastically
participated in the many educational and entertainment
activities available.
Visitors were also attracted to The Institute to see performances
by the Macedonia Gospel Choir during Black
History Month and the U.S. Army's Old Guard Fife and
Drum Corps during San Antonids Fiesta Week. The
Institute also hosted the first annual Texas Folkloric
Dance Competition as well as naturalization ceremonies
for an average of 200 new U.S. citizens each month.
The Institute cosponsored one-day seminars on Staging
Successful Festivals and Events with Texas A&M in four cities
around the state. Institute staff addressed such topics
as effective marketing, volunteer management and financial
controls to nearly 250 attendees.
Over 34,000 people from 52 convention groups visiting
San Antonio throughout the year scheduled evening
activities at The Institute, during which they were able
to tour the exhibit floor and learn about the cultural
heritage of Texans.
13
· .. And Produce Educational
Material
The Institute communicates detailed information on the
heritage of the state and its people.
To disseminate this information we produce books,
exhibits, catalogs, pamphlets, slide shows, filmstrips,
videotapes, traveling exhibits and teacher's guides designed
for the general public, study groups, colleges,
schools, libraries and museums.
This fiscal year The Institute sold 12,149 copies of its
43 books and pamphlets, and 2,116 of its 26 audiovisual
programs. The newest addition to The Texians and the
Texans Series is The English Texans, published in both
hard- and soft-cover editions. In the ethnic pamphlet
series, The Norwegian Texans and The Mexican Texans were
printed in a new format. The rewritten and redesigned
Teacher's Guide to The Institute oj Texan Cultures describes
The Institute's exhibits and their historical significance.
The guide also suggests student activities which meet
new Texas curriculum requirements.
The recently released audiovisual program and study
guide, Symbols oj Texas, will meet curriculum guidelines
for social studies education set by the Texas Education
Agency and is aimed at kindergarten through fourth
grade. Texas's numerous official and unofficial symbols
are presented and explained. The text was completed
for our newest book, TheJapanese Texans, to be published
in 1987 in hard- and soft-cover editions.
14
Our Membership Programs
The Alliance, The Institute's at-home volunteer organization,
is the vital force without which most of our
programs could not succeed. This dedicated group of
almost 400 people contributed 47,487 hours during the
year, conservatively valued at $474,870. They brought
the history of Texas alive for thousands of schoolchildren
and visitors on the exhibit floor and in the community.
They assisted curators with artifacts, worked with library
and research staffs, managed information desks, manned
our Store and supported the staff in almost every department.
Their contribution of time and talent remains The
Institute's most valuable asset.
Associate members pay to belong to the Institute membership
program for individuals and corporations
throughout Texas. The program consists of seven categories
ranging in cost from $25 (for yearly individual
membership) to $5,000 for a lifetime membership. Participation
in this program affords Texans the opportunity
to become involved in the preservation of history and
culture. Membership funds are used to support the
Associates Program and to assist in underwriting other
Institute costs. Associate members receive invitations to
exhibit openings and a variety of special events; travel
opportunities with the Institute Heritage Tours program;
free or reduced admission to lectures, films and concerts;
subscription to Passages, our quarterly Institute newsletter

and calendar; discounts at the Institute Store and on
Institute publications, audiovisuals and Texas Folklife
Festival tickets. Information on the Associates Program
can be obtained by contacting the Membership Coordinator,
The Institute of Texan Cultures, P.o. Box 1226,
San Antonio, Texas 78294-1226, (512) 226-7651.
Ambassadors are a statewide network of volunteers who
provide a vital link between The Institute and the many
communities of Texas. The program was reorganized
during the year to better coordinate The Institute's needs
with the interests and talents of the individual members.
The Institute staff embraced this program wholeheartedly,
obtaining assistance from Ambassadors in a variety
of areas. Ambassadors have been asked to try to locate
needed artifacts for exhibits, coordinate the collecting
of oral histories in their communities and conduct Heritage
Tours. More than 200 individuals located in 115
communities provided many needed services. Several
Ambassadors have received training in the presentation
of Tex-Kits, and they are now demonstrating the kits
in schools, nursing homes and other community organizations.
Promotional materials for our Texas Folklife
Festival were distributed in more than 60 Texas communities
by nearly 100 Ambassadors. Other Ambassadors
promoted Institute products and services by distributing
catalogs, brochures and educational materials to their
local schoolteachers, librarians and bookstore managers.
Many clipped articles of historical significance from their
local newspapers for The Institute's library research files.
The Ambassadors have responded enthusiastically to the
needs of The Institute, helping citizens in many communities
to become more aware of and to appreciate the
rich and diverse heritage of Texas and Texans.
The Heritage Tours program functioned as an Institutewide
membership benefit. Rejuvenated this past year,
the program included trips to places of historical and
cultural significance in Texas and Mexico. Tours ranged
from one to nine days, taking participants to such locations
as historic Victoria and Indianola, the vast desert
lands of Big Bend and Mexico's ancient world of the
Maya - the Yucatan.

state appropriations,
Volunteer hours: 47,487
Widespread public and private support of The Institute
and its purposes, projects and programs was evidenced
through grants, gifts and other donations. More funds
were received from these sources this year than ever
before. By August 31, 1986, more than $421,794 had
been received, $368,457 in money and $53,337 in giftsin-
kind. These ranged from a 50-percent discount on
computer equipment to a large number of adobe bricks.
The Institute's first formal endowment fund, originated
in FY1985 by the Development and Advisory Boards,
continued to grow. At year-end the Pat and Jack Maguire
Outreach Endowment Fund amounted to nearly
$56,500. Interest from the endowment is used to support
outreach programs and services of The Institute.
Major projects supported by gifts and grants included:
- Composition and premier performance of a symphonic
concerto.
-Afro-American Communities in Houston, a special
project of the Texas Folklife Festival, supported by the
National Endowment of the Arts.
- Compilation of an index of names in the Bexar Archives
which will facilitate research by historians and
genealogists.
- Institute on Texas History and Culture, workshops
which instructed teachers how best to teach those subjects,
using artifacts and inquiry teaching.
- Reach for the Sky: Aviation in Texas, a major exhibit;
smaller exhibits for airline terminals; a traveling
exhibit and a book entitled Aviation in Texas.
- Other traveling exhibits - How Texans Dressed and What
They Say About Texas (in research), The Greeks in Texas:
A Proud Heritage and additional copies of the popular
traveling trunk, Cowboys and Cattle Drives.
-Audiovisual programs; an adobe structure to be built
on the "Back 40"; a longhorn steer for the exhibit floor;
a 75-inch-diameter, rotating geophysical globe; and
restoration of Spanish Colonial gates.
18
- Also a new van for staff use, police radios, Store display
cases and a forklift truck. Unrestricted gifts helped
pay for other operations, programs and projects.
The generosity of The Institute's constituents was felt
in virtually every area, and this help enabled the staff
to conduct many research, education, and communications
projects and programs which would not otherwise
have been possible.

| Full Text | THE INSTITUTE OF TEXAN CULTURES IS ... The Texas Experience Yesterday, Today, Tomorrow People from all over the world have come to settle in Texas, bringing with them elements of their own heritage. Today the state brims with the culture, traditions and folklore of these people. They have given Texas an exciting story to tell, and The Institute of Texan Cultures brings this story to life. The Institute and its activities portray and interpret the adventures, hardships and accomplishments of the people who developed the state - from the legendary figures and dauntless settlers of yesteryear to modern-day pioneers. Through its exhibits, events, programs and products The Institute blends education and entertainment into an enjoyable learning experience - The Texas Experience. · Highlights Texans and visitors to the state continued to show great interest in Institute products and services during the year. Tours of adults and children increased, as did visits by the general public, despite major construction in the area which disrupted access to HemisFair Plaza. Educational programs staff members and volunteers expanded their outreach audience by more than 50 percent with visits to classrooms, nursing homes and miscellaneous gatherings. New pamphIets, books, audiovisuals and exhibits were developed, rental of traveling exhibits increased, and more than 12,000 publications and 2,000 audiovisual products were sold. Several administrative functions were combined, reducing costs and offering the prospect of new initiatives and achievements. Perhaps the most ambitious undertaking in The Institute's history was the development and presentation of our Sesquicentennial exhibit, Reach for the Sky: Aviation in Texas, made possible by a grant from Southwest Airlines. Nearly three years of research and production went into the project, and virtually every department and hundreds of volunteers contributed to the effort. The exhibit opened October 27, 1985, and was a popular attraction throughout the seven months' showing. A variety of educational programs was featured monthly in conjunction with Reach for the Sky, and small exhibits were placed in airport terminals throughout Texas. A traveling version was completed and made available for display in schools, libraries and other locations as requested. A second new traveling exhibit, The Greeks in Texas: A Proud Heritage, was produced, and Mexican Folk Toys was redesigned and rebuilt. On the main exhibit floor the Filipino Texans Area was permanently installed, and the new Introductory Area neared completion at year-end. The special exhibits program continued with the presentation of four excellent shows in our small galleries. During the summer, as part of our expanding educational role, the Educational Programs department conducted its second annual workshop for fourth and seventh grade teachers, the Institute on Texas History and Culture, with almost double the students of the previous year. On-site teacher-training sessions continued during the school year when requested by schools and districts. In addition, a new teacher-training program was begun which utilized a statewide interactive television/telephone network. A new Teacher's Guide to The Institute of Texan Cultures was developed and published to help teachers correlate their Institute visits with curriculum requirements. Our expanding role in higher education will continue during the coming year, with Institute staff and UTSA faculty cooperating in a new course for senior undergraduate student teachers. 4 These 1986 activities stretched the capability of our educational staff and Alliance volunteers, who handled more than 74,000 visiting schoolchildren on the exhibit floor, an increase of 14 percent. They also reached out to 46,537 other children in their classrooms with TexKit presentations, an increase of 32 percent! This latter statistic indicates a phenomenal achievement by a handful of staff members and volunteers. Most of these children were within 50 miles of San Antonio, but as more Ambassadors were trained, more Tex-Kits developed and more classes presented on the interactive video network, the reach ofInstitute programs expanded to more schoolrooms in diverse areas of the state. Of course, other volunteers continued to assist our administrative, library, research, Store and curatorial staffs with careful, consistent and talented efforts. I am vastly proud of the dedicated work of all our wonderful volunteers. They are vital to our operations, and without them our programs would falter and die. The 15th Annual Texas Folklife Festival was certainly one of the best ever with 90,000 visitors, although for the first time in many years it was not a financial success. It was very hot (over 100 degrees every day), the economy was faltering, and there was extensive construction in the area which made it difficult to get to the gates. The participants were in great form and humor, however, and I was pleased to see large numbers offamilies with children enjoying the activities. The Festival staff is working hard to trim future costs and increase revenues, and I am confident that financial viability will return in 1987. These accomplishments are impressive and generate pride in the hundreds of volunteers and staff members who worked long and hard to make them happen. Our people give freely of themselves and demand little in return, working behind the scenes without fanfare or public recognition. Their tremendous personal contribution represents a unique and valuable gift for the people of Texas. John R. McGiffert Interim Executive Director 5 1985-1986 in revzew We Reach the People And They Listen, Experience and Learn This year 392,963 people visited The Institute to study Texas's multicultural heritage. On the exhibit floor and during Folklife Festival interpreters explained various aspects of life in early Texas. Visitors touched and handled artifacts in interpretive areas and learned about the lives and contributions of the many ethnic and cultural groups that make up Texas today. Our research staff conducts archival and field research, and stays in touch with a wide network of scholars in other university components. Nationally known scholars from a variety of disciplines contract to perform additional Institute research. An expanding Oral History Program has developed a collection of taped and transcribed interviews with a wide-ranging variety of Texans. Under our summer internship program, graduate students make forays across the state in search of community folklife to be featured in Institute programs. Research ultimately serves as the foundation for all of our programmingpublications, exhibits, special events, educational programs and audiovisuals. Completed research in 1985-1986 resulted in two new major exhibits, one on aviation and another on Filipino Texans; a traveling exhibit on Greek Texans, and a publication and Folklife Festival presentation concerning Afro-American communities in Houston. To facilitate scholarly research in Texas history and folk culture, our noncirculating reference library serves the research needs of the Institute staff, Associates, Alliance, Ambassadors, students, teachers and the general public. The library contains a large historic photograph collection as well as books, periodicals, vertical files and audiovisual materials. Many photographs in the collection are copies of the earliest-known images of Texas. More than 500 photos were added during the year, 300 of these covering the early history of Japanese Texans. Copies of most of our historic photographs, paintings, engravings and maps can be purchased. 7 We Teach At The Institute we help students see Texas history as something that is alive and meaningful by having them take an active role in learning. To do this we use the inquiry approach. Instead of simply providing data, we encourage students to ask and answer their own questions. We also gain their participation in interpretive areas which are interwoven with our exhibits and focus on various aspects of life in Texas. For example, youngsters can sit down at our chuck wagon to experience firsthand how cowboys worked and lived. Interpreters at this and other interpretive areas share their knowledge while the kids handle artifacts, ask questions and, in some small way, develop a feeling of having "lived" a memorable personal experience. It's fun and educational too. Before they realize it, students have learned something about Texas history. This year more than ever before Texas educators recognized the benefits of our teaching methods and incorporated them into their history curricula. In 1985-1986 we conducted two sessions of our Institute on Texas History and Culture for teachers. These two-week workshops provided fourth and seventh grade teachers with new and innovative strategies for teaching Texas history. Teachers learned more about the people who settled Texas, and they used our instructional techniques to develop new lesson plans. Library resources and many of our products were also utilized. Lesson plans were shared with other workshop members and then taken back to schools across Texas for use in many classrooms. Similar teacher-training workshops were also presented to hundreds of teachers through TI-IN, a statewide interactive television network, and to several in-service 8 teachers' seminars through which we reached more than 160 teachers. Another 270 history teachers saw our presentations at workshops and conferences such as the Texas State Historical Association's History Awareness Workshop and the Texas State Council for the Social Studies Conference. More than 90 University of Texas at San Antonio education students enrolled in social studies methods courses visited the exhibit floor to observe our teaching techniques this year. Their experience proved so valuable that UTSA incorporated mandatory exhibit floor teaching experience into the 1986-1987 history methods curriculum. An additional 258 education majors from various Texas colleges and universities also received extensive briefings and demonstrations prior to and during their scheduled tours. Thousands of educational tours to The Institute were provided for preschool, elementary and middle school groups during 1985-1986. Our outdoor "Back 40" educational activities dramatically increased this year because of new tour-scheduling initiatives. Half of the students in many tour groups now visit our exhibit floor while the others visit the "Back 40." Schedules are then reversed during the second half of the tour, allowing all students . to experience both indoor and outdoor exhibit areas. The outdoor area includes interpretive centers such as a one-room schoolhouse, a barn and windmill, and a cavalry fort headquarters. Students write on slates and read from McGuffey's Readers in the schoolhouse, discover the importance to early settlers of water and windmills, and learn what life was like at a frontier fort. In our continuing effort to serve Texans with special educational needs, we are currently training volunteers to provide exhibit tours for the hearing-impaired. Educational programs supporting this year's aviation exhibit included activities such as kite and paper airplane making and flying, storytelling on the exhibit floor, an aviation-related contest for seventh grade students and production of "in-flight games" for use by children aboard Southwest Airlines' flights. Visitors also enjoyed our aviation guest speakers, films, puppet shows and special demonstrations by the Confederate Air Force and the San Antonio Hot Air Balloon Club. 9 We Exhibit Institute visitors enjoyed a bonanza of new exhibits during the year, beginning with our Sesquicentennial production of Reach for the Sky: Aviation in Texas. In the planning stages for three years, this exhibit required the skills of virtually every department to produce the most ambitious single effort in The Institute's history. Reach for the Sky: Aviation in Texas (October 27, 1985, through June 8, 1986) was made possible through a grant from Southwest Airlines. Tracing Texas's role in the history of aviation from Jacob Brodbeck to the announcement that "the Eagle has landed;' this exhibit brought together all aspects of The Institute in public presentations. It was highlighted by artifacts such as a World War I Curtiss IN-4 'Jenny" biplane borrowed from the San Antonio Museum Association and a series of Institute-produced audiovisual presentations. The exhibit was developed by the Research, Exhibits, Art and Fabrication departments, with assistance from two prominent aviation historians and many other organizations and institutions. In addition, a select group of other special exhibits was presented to our visitors. Black Wings: The American Black in Aviation (February 1 through March 11, 1986) was a production of the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibits Services brought to The Institute in celebration of Black History Month. This was the second consecutive year that The Institute presented special exhibits and activities during Black History Month. Although early aviation was generally the realm of white males, blacks also made important contributions, including a Texas woman aviator trained in France. This exhibit celebrated the achievements of these people. 10 Forgotten Dignity: A Photographic History 1880-1930 (February 4 through March 7, 1986) featured the rural black community of Bonham, Texas. Striking and poignant photographs brought turn-of-the-century Bonham back to life again. Forgotten Dignity was produced in 1984 by East Texas State University and made its second appearance at The Institute for Black History Month in 1986. The Spanish Colonization in Texas: Its Settlements and Architecture (April 15 through June 15, 1986) was a collaborative project between The Institute of Texan Cultures and Texas A&M University. This production was made possible by a grant from the government of Spain and focused on Spanish Colonial architecture in Texas. Stunning photo murals and interesting maps highlighted this study of Spanish heritage in Texas. Texas Lithographs (August 19 through October 5, 1986) was a Sesquicentennial project of the Amon Carter Museum. The exhibit included more than 60 19th century lithographs, a medium which became vitally important in the early part of that century. Mid-19th century bird's-eye views of Texas cities and dramatic renderings of events such as the 1900 Galveston tidal wave highlighted the exhibit. The Institute assisted in exhibit development and was one of only three display locations. The Filipino Area was reinstalled on the main exhibit floor. It tells the story of this relatively small group of immigrants. Although a Filipino cabin boy named Francisco Flores established a fishing business at Port Isabel in 1822, major Filipino immigration did not occur until after World War II. The achievements and contributions of Flores and other Filipinos to the growth and development of the state are highlighted in the new exhibit amid colorful and intriguing objects of Filipino culture. By the end of the fiscal year we were preparing to install a new Introductory Area made possible by gifts from Mr. and Mrs. 0. Scott Petty and Mr. and Mrs. Scott Petty Jr. and family. Highlighted by a six-foot geophysical globe, the area introduces the visitor to The Institute. This exhibit asks visitors to think about how past cultures may affect their lives today. Research and design for the Indian Area was well under way by year-end. The rich and diverse heritage of Indian Texans will be presented through exciting new murals, interpretive areas and audiovisuals. 11 " r I We Travel The Institute reaches out to all Texans, We now have ' 37 traveling exhibits and 18 traveling trunks on 23 sepa- II rate subjects designed for use in schools, libraries, museums, banks, malls and other public spaces. These prod- , ucts are so popular that most are booked several months I in advance. In 1985-1986 hundreds of thousands ofl people saw our exhibits and used our traveling trunks ' through 206 bookings in 80 cities across Texas and in Colorado. Five exhibits traveled to Norway. Ten small exhibits incorporating material from the major exhibit Reach for the Sky: Aviation in Texas were produced for Southwest Airlines for display in ten Texas airport terminals. A traveling exhibit version was then completed and made available for display around the state. Other traveling exhibits produced this year were The Greeks in Texas: A Proud Heritage and a redesigned and rebuilt Mexican Folk Toys in both wall-hanging and freestanding formats. The Institute also fabricated special exhibits for Texas Tech, Texas A&M University and Randolph Air Force Base. Teachers allover Texas use our traveling trunks to involve their students in historic subjects. Traveling trunks are hands-on teaching tools containing artifacts, games, vocabulary cards, teacher's guides, books, filmstrips and much more on various topics in Texas history. Our latest traveling trunk, Cowboys and Cattle Drives, is designed to teach about the life of the American cowboy during cattle drives. Cowboys and Cattle Drives received the Museum Service Award for most outstanding educational pro- . gram in 1985 by the Texas Historical Commission. Volunteers and staff members used our Tex-Kits to teach Texas history to 58,276 persons in schools, clubs and nursing homes throughout the state. Tex-Kits are smaller than traveling trunks, address broader topics and are presented by staff, docents or Ambassadors. The subject of our latest Tex-Kit is Texas aviation. 12 We Conduct Special Events ... The 15th Annual Texas Folklife Festival, The Institute's largest special event, brought together volunteer workers and participants to demonstrate their pioneer crafts and share ethnic traditions with 90,000 visitors. Despite unusually intense heat and the presence of major construction projects all around HemisFair Plaza, the Festival attracted large numbers of families who enthusiastically participated in the many educational and entertainment activities available. Visitors were also attracted to The Institute to see performances by the Macedonia Gospel Choir during Black History Month and the U.S. Army's Old Guard Fife and Drum Corps during San Antonids Fiesta Week. The Institute also hosted the first annual Texas Folkloric Dance Competition as well as naturalization ceremonies for an average of 200 new U.S. citizens each month. The Institute cosponsored one-day seminars on Staging Successful Festivals and Events with Texas A&M in four cities around the state. Institute staff addressed such topics as effective marketing, volunteer management and financial controls to nearly 250 attendees. Over 34,000 people from 52 convention groups visiting San Antonio throughout the year scheduled evening activities at The Institute, during which they were able to tour the exhibit floor and learn about the cultural heritage of Texans. 13 · .. And Produce Educational Material The Institute communicates detailed information on the heritage of the state and its people. To disseminate this information we produce books, exhibits, catalogs, pamphlets, slide shows, filmstrips, videotapes, traveling exhibits and teacher's guides designed for the general public, study groups, colleges, schools, libraries and museums. This fiscal year The Institute sold 12,149 copies of its 43 books and pamphlets, and 2,116 of its 26 audiovisual programs. The newest addition to The Texians and the Texans Series is The English Texans, published in both hard- and soft-cover editions. In the ethnic pamphlet series, The Norwegian Texans and The Mexican Texans were printed in a new format. The rewritten and redesigned Teacher's Guide to The Institute oj Texan Cultures describes The Institute's exhibits and their historical significance. The guide also suggests student activities which meet new Texas curriculum requirements. The recently released audiovisual program and study guide, Symbols oj Texas, will meet curriculum guidelines for social studies education set by the Texas Education Agency and is aimed at kindergarten through fourth grade. Texas's numerous official and unofficial symbols are presented and explained. The text was completed for our newest book, TheJapanese Texans, to be published in 1987 in hard- and soft-cover editions. 14 Our Membership Programs The Alliance, The Institute's at-home volunteer organization, is the vital force without which most of our programs could not succeed. This dedicated group of almost 400 people contributed 47,487 hours during the year, conservatively valued at $474,870. They brought the history of Texas alive for thousands of schoolchildren and visitors on the exhibit floor and in the community. They assisted curators with artifacts, worked with library and research staffs, managed information desks, manned our Store and supported the staff in almost every department. Their contribution of time and talent remains The Institute's most valuable asset. Associate members pay to belong to the Institute membership program for individuals and corporations throughout Texas. The program consists of seven categories ranging in cost from $25 (for yearly individual membership) to $5,000 for a lifetime membership. Participation in this program affords Texans the opportunity to become involved in the preservation of history and culture. Membership funds are used to support the Associates Program and to assist in underwriting other Institute costs. Associate members receive invitations to exhibit openings and a variety of special events; travel opportunities with the Institute Heritage Tours program; free or reduced admission to lectures, films and concerts; subscription to Passages, our quarterly Institute newsletter 15 'I I' and calendar; discounts at the Institute Store and on Institute publications, audiovisuals and Texas Folklife Festival tickets. Information on the Associates Program can be obtained by contacting the Membership Coordinator, The Institute of Texan Cultures, P.o. Box 1226, San Antonio, Texas 78294-1226, (512) 226-7651. Ambassadors are a statewide network of volunteers who provide a vital link between The Institute and the many communities of Texas. The program was reorganized during the year to better coordinate The Institute's needs with the interests and talents of the individual members. The Institute staff embraced this program wholeheartedly, obtaining assistance from Ambassadors in a variety of areas. Ambassadors have been asked to try to locate needed artifacts for exhibits, coordinate the collecting of oral histories in their communities and conduct Heritage Tours. More than 200 individuals located in 115 communities provided many needed services. Several Ambassadors have received training in the presentation of Tex-Kits, and they are now demonstrating the kits in schools, nursing homes and other community organizations. Promotional materials for our Texas Folklife Festival were distributed in more than 60 Texas communities by nearly 100 Ambassadors. Other Ambassadors promoted Institute products and services by distributing catalogs, brochures and educational materials to their local schoolteachers, librarians and bookstore managers. Many clipped articles of historical significance from their local newspapers for The Institute's library research files. The Ambassadors have responded enthusiastically to the needs of The Institute, helping citizens in many communities to become more aware of and to appreciate the rich and diverse heritage of Texas and Texans. The Heritage Tours program functioned as an Institutewide membership benefit. Rejuvenated this past year, the program included trips to places of historical and cultural significance in Texas and Mexico. Tours ranged from one to nine days, taking participants to such locations as historic Victoria and Indianola, the vast desert lands of Big Bend and Mexico's ancient world of the Maya - the Yucatan. 16 Financial Data Report of Operations September 1, 1985-August 31, 1986 REVENUE EXPENDED State Appropriations $1,967,308-44.65 % $2,253,713-50.14% Local Income 117,995- 2.68% Publications, Audiovisuals, Service Departments 295,164- 6.70% 501,338-11.15% Folklife Festival, Store, Parking Facilities 1,495,176-33.93% 1,440,120-32.04% Public and Private Voluntary Giving 368,457- 8.36% 293,143- 6.52 % Interest Income 122,236- 2.77% Endowment Income 40,132- .91% 6,100- .14% Total Current Revenues $4,406,468-100% $4,494,414-100% Expenditures Greater than Revenue $87,946 Ratio of Local Funds to State Appropriations: Local Funds $2,439,160 Ratio 1.24 State Appropriations 17 I' Once again The Institute of Texan Cultures earned more than half of its total revenue from sources other than state appropriations, Volunteer hours: 47,487 Widespread public and private support of The Institute and its purposes, projects and programs was evidenced through grants, gifts and other donations. More funds were received from these sources this year than ever before. By August 31, 1986, more than $421,794 had been received, $368,457 in money and $53,337 in giftsin- kind. These ranged from a 50-percent discount on computer equipment to a large number of adobe bricks. The Institute's first formal endowment fund, originated in FY1985 by the Development and Advisory Boards, continued to grow. At year-end the Pat and Jack Maguire Outreach Endowment Fund amounted to nearly $56,500. Interest from the endowment is used to support outreach programs and services of The Institute. Major projects supported by gifts and grants included: - Composition and premier performance of a symphonic concerto. -Afro-American Communities in Houston, a special project of the Texas Folklife Festival, supported by the National Endowment of the Arts. - Compilation of an index of names in the Bexar Archives which will facilitate research by historians and genealogists. - Institute on Texas History and Culture, workshops which instructed teachers how best to teach those subjects, using artifacts and inquiry teaching. - Reach for the Sky: Aviation in Texas, a major exhibit; smaller exhibits for airline terminals; a traveling exhibit and a book entitled Aviation in Texas. - Other traveling exhibits - How Texans Dressed and What They Say About Texas (in research), The Greeks in Texas: A Proud Heritage and additional copies of the popular traveling trunk, Cowboys and Cattle Drives. -Audiovisual programs; an adobe structure to be built on the "Back 40"; a longhorn steer for the exhibit floor; a 75-inch-diameter, rotating geophysical globe; and restoration of Spanish Colonial gates. 18 - Also a new van for staff use, police radios, Store display cases and a forklift truck. Unrestricted gifts helped pay for other operations, programs and projects. The generosity of The Institute's constituents was felt in virtually every area, and this help enabled the staff to conduct many research, education, and communications projects and programs which would not otherwise have been possible. 19 ,I ' i, , I Board of Regents The Board of Regents of The University of Texas System: seated, from left - Beryl Buckley Milburn, Austin; Chairman Jess Hay, Dallas; Janey Slaughter Briscoe, Uvalde; standing, from left-William F.
